submission...
I hate being wrong. Anytime I get into a discussion, I have the innate feeling that I must come out of the conversation feeling victorious. It’s bad. Last week, I had to interview a person for my Spiritual Formation final paper. I chose to interview my youth minister from way back, Dave. We were talking about what ways he furthers his relationship with God, and one thing he said really...

Question of the day...
We discussed this in my small group during class earlier, and I was wondering your thoughts: Is the “beloved community” (a society within this world where social justice is achieved, peace is found, total equality is the norm, and everyone lives through love for one another) something that can be attained separate from the fruition of the Kingdom of God through the coming of Jesus?

Question of the day...
This was something we briefly discussed in my Spiritual Formation class a few days back: What is the driving force behind your views on health care reform? (i.e. less coverage, not having as much, spending more in taxes, trying to provide health care for all people, fear, “party politics”, etc.) Just wondering.

Question of the Day...
What’s more important: allocating more money for military spending or allocating more money for health care? Either: more money to save people’s lives, or more money to that kills people overseas.

SpringBreakTwentyTen, Day 1...
So, it has begun. Spring Break 2010. This is the first Spring Break in a while (that I can remember, at least) where I was able to go on a trip instead of spending the whole time working and catching up on school work. And not only was I going on a trip, but I went solo. Just me. Out to Denver, Colorado. To see my friend Michael. Yeah, I am not an avid airport-goer…and I’m fairly...

a new look...
So yeah, I switched things up on the blog here. I think I like this new look…at least for now. Also, I got the dealsky working so that people can post comments to my blogs. So, if you feel compelled to call me out or anything, please do so. I’m okay with that. Also, I have this other new dealsky that’s at the bottom of the page that will play music that has been posted on the...

I intend for this to be the beginning of an open discussion. I would like some feedback to see what others think about this as well. This is going to be about the pursuit of social justice today. And no, this is not going to be a response to Glenn Beck, because I don’t even want to get started with that. If you don’t know I’m talking, then complete the following: click here,...

sometimes, all we need is a hug...
In this time of growing poverty, increasing warfare, and rising health care costs, may we be a people of revolution. May we not be distracted by the events of everyday life to the point that we become numb to the hurts that exist outside of our bubble. May we step outside of the classrooms, the textbooks, the theories, and the academia to be people of real actions…not debated or discussed...

don't just remember, but also honor...
Here is a message I received from a group on Facebook, and I think it’s pretty powerful to think about now: April 4, 1967, Riverside Church, New York City: “These are revolutionary times. All over the globe men are revolting against old systems of exploitation and oppression and out of the wombs of a frail world new systems of justice and equality are being born. The shirtless and...

School’s back in session for the semester (actually, this fatal tragedy began last week, but this is first I have been able to sit down to write). And already, I have gotten the weird feeling for the end of this semester, which will be topped off with graduation occurring on May 8. But, alas, that is not what this post is about. Earlier tonight I left my room on my way to the gym, and I...

I apologize in advance. This is a bit of a rant. Garrett said it may be beneficial for me to rant from time to time. So here we go… I bought a book today just because I found it to be so incredibly ridiculous. It’s called The Jesus Machine: How James Dobson, Focus on the Family, and Evangelical America are Winning the Culture War. Soak that in for a minute or two. If you know...

as cruel as school children...
This morning, I was going to wake up early and make breakfast for the guys in the apartment and whoever else wanted to come by.  Well, that didn’t happen.  Slept through my alarm.  I mean, after only getting a mere 3 hours of sleep a night for days, I guess I was allowed to get 10 hours of sleep last night.  Maybe. But anyway, I decided, then, to go ahead and make the breakfast I was going...

So, some verses were talked about in my Bible class on Monday, but I did not think much about them.  Then later that same day, I overheard some people talking about the same verses.  Still, I just brushed it off.  Then on my way home from work the next day, I drove past a church, and the sign out front had the same verses on it.  I guess he can be pretty persistent sometimes, and there’s a...

Dear Meme, It was about this time of the night, 1 year, 7 months, and 26 days ago, when I was sitting in my dorm room on the eighth-floor, writing to reminisce on the life of your husband, K.C., who had been such a huge influence in my life. I got the call around 4 o’clock this past morning from my Dad, telling me the news.  I’m not sure the full magnitude of everything has...

“I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” -Mother Teresa “So give a little bit, give a little bit of your love to me. I’ll give a little bit, I’ll give a little bit of my life for you. Now’s the time we need to share. So send a smile, we’re on our way back home.” -Goo Goo Dolls,...

the diamond in the rough...
There’s a movie I haven’t seen in years, and I probably need to Netflix it and watch it again (speaking of which, I have a free month trial I need to use before Halloween).  It’s called City of Angels with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan.  Once you push past through the sappy love story, Cage acting like he does in every movie he’s in (who knew the same attitude and acting could...

do you think we could work out a sign?
I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve been asked which Hillsong United song is my favorite.  Or whether I am a David Crowder kind of guy, or if I lean more Charlie Hall.  (Well, if went by goatees, I guess I would side more with Crowder, and I do enjoy his music more.) But then I am put into the awkward situation of saying, “Umm, I don’t exactly like...

a start to another journey...
Life is starting to get pretty damn stressful; it seems like this is the point when everything hits the fan and I’m being forced to do or die. Senior Year. 18 hours. Work. GRE. Senior thesis. Quitting smoking. Grad School. Growing up. Blah. Blah. Blah. I’ve thought of this semester (or year, even) as being about journeys. Internship at the capitol: journey. Quitting smoking: journey....
